In the winter of 1940/41, during the Italo-Greek conflict, the head of government Benito Mussolini moved the headquarters to Villa Ciardi for a few days to closely monitor operations on the Greek front. The caves served as a connection to Andria and Corato and as an escape route in case of emergency.

Today, they have been cleared and closed at a certain depth to prevent the entry of criminals.

During the Christmas period, Villa Ciardi builds an evocative path in the caves to see the Nativity.
